Hillary and Bill Clinton have close ties with embattled Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe — and that's likely to spell big trouble for Democrats, says Mark Halperin, managing editor of Bloomberg Politics.

"Terry McAuliffe being targeted now is very bad for the Democrats, very bad for the Clintons because he is so close to them," Halperin said Tuesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.

The ominous prediction came a day after reports surfaced that McAuliffe, former chair of the Democratic National Committee, is being probed by the FBI on the legality of some contributions made to his gubernatorial campaign in 2013

The Washington Free Beacon reports the investigation began last year and part of the focus is on McAuliffe's stint as a member of the board of directors for the Clinton Global Initiative, an arm of The Clinton Foundation, launched by former President Bill Clinton in 2001.

A McAuliffe spokesperson says the governor's office has not been contacted by the FBI.

"It's strange that it's been going on for months and the governor's office claims to not know anything about it," Halperin said on "Morning Joe."

"It's Democratic FBI, Justice Department. It's a Democratic administration and the fact that they are looking at this suggests the potential problem."
