Rep. Greene Warns About Gaetz, McCarthy Purge

By    |   Monday, 02 October 2023 05:01 PM EDT

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., might not agree with her friend and GOP colleague Matt Gaetz's plans to file a motion to vacate on House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., but she also warned fellow Republicans against hatching plans to expel the Florida firebrand.

Greene got busy on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter on Monday, touching on myriad subjects about the weekend's events, notably averting a federal shutdown. But two posts in particular zeroed in on the continued infighting within the Republican conference.

Regarding McCarthy, Greene said in her post that "a mtv (motion to vacate) gives the upper hand to the Democrats."

Gaetz on Sunday told CNN that he plans to move forward with the motion to vacate later this week, upset with McCarthy for leaning on Democrats to get the votes on a clean continuing resolution to fund the government for 45 days and avoid a shutdown.

"I don't agree that a motion to vacate will effectively create the changes needed to solve the intentional systemic failure that create the annual never-ending CR's and Christmas omnibus mega spending packages," Greene said Monday.

Gaetz has repeatedly threatened McCarthy with the motion, to the point where McCarthy and his allies appear to be getting used to his routine.

"So be it. Bring it on," McCarthy said Sunday, echoing statements he made late last week ahead of the shutdown. "I'll survive."

But there are reportedly a cadre of Republicans who are tiring of Gaetz's shtick and are looking for a reason to expel him from Congress. But Greene warned against that.

"And a Republican led effort to expel Matt Gaetz absolutely will not be tolerated by Republicans across the country. I can guarantee you that. Remember when 11 R's voted against me and 10 R's voted to impeach Pres Trump?" Greene said.

Fox News and CNN reported Sunday that there are Republicans who are poised to move on Gaetz depending on the results of the Ethics Committee report on Gaetz. One Republican told Fox News that the report is written but doesn't know what the report says.

"No one can stand him at this point. A smart guy without morals," the unidentified Republican said.

The Ethics panel revived an investigation into Gaetz in July amid allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use among other violations.

"We want him out," another Republican member told CNN. It would take a two-thirds majority to expel Gaetz from the House.

"Both the mtv and expulsion plans are wrong," Greene tweeted.
