A marijuana advocacy group handed out tens of thousands of joints in Washington, D.C. Friday during President Donald Trump's inauguration.

According to The New York Times, DCMJ distributed about 8,000 joints to protesters attending the inaugural activities. Possessing small amounts of marijuana is legal in the nation's capital, but it is against the law to smoke or ingest it in public. Friday's protest was a statement against that law.

The group's founder Nikolas Schiller told the Times protesters were "encouraged to light them up if they want to engage in nonviolent civil disobedience."

Schiller suggested that people light up their joints four minutes and 20 seconds into Trump's inaugural speech. The protest, he said, was against Sen. Jeff Sessions, Trump's nominee to serve as attorney general.

"He's said that good people don't smoke marijuana," Schiller told the Times. "We found that to be insulting to the millions of Americans that do."

DCMJ posted several photos and messages about its protest on its Twitter account:
