When Marco Rubio was asked Wednesday which nonpolitician he would most like to have a beer with he named a Nobel Peace Prize winner – Malala Yousafzai.
Malala is only 18 years old, and her Muslim faith forbids alcohol consumption for people of any age.
This didn't go unnoticed on Twitter:
The Atlantic cited the exchange in its
"Gaffe Track" blog, but also cut the GOP presidential hopeful some slack.
"Malala is pretty darn cool," The Atlantic admitted, and besides, "Marco Rubio is the most dudely candidate in the race, right?"
Malala has fought for education rights for girls in her native Pakistan. In retaliation for her outspokenness, she was shot in the face at age 15 by the Taliban on her way to school.
Her story was turned into a documentary, "He Named Me Malala."
According to the
New York Daily News, Rubio also listed Russian chess legend and political dissident Garry Kasparov and Miami Dolphins great Dan Marino as two people he'd like to knock back a few with.
