President Donald Trump is working to balance new gun laws that actually work, while protecting rights and safety of Americans, according former White House Legislative Director Marc Lotter on Newsmax TV.

"The president if focusing not only on fixing the problem, but doing it in a way that allows for due process and allows for people maintain their Second Amendment rights," Lotter, who is now director of strategic communications for Trump 2020, told Wednesday's "The Joe Pags Show."

Lotter noted both shooters in this past weekend's mass murders in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio obtained their weapons legally with background checks that did not trigger red flags.

"The president is committed to making sure that due process is in that system so people aren't denied their rights without due process," Lotter told host Joe Pagliarulo.

"But he is also right in fixing the background check system because both of these shooters legally got their guns and they were not flagged for previous activities."

Lotter supports more restrictive red flag laws being worked up by congressional Republicans, based on the Secret Service threat assessment procedures.

"I've got to tell you, these red flag laws, they work," Lotter said, pointing to "see something, say something" after 9/11 terrorist attacks and "friends don't let friends drive drunk" to combat drunken driving.

"The American people have it in our system to be able to be on alert, to notify people when we see something out of place, or if it's someone that we know – or that we're connected to – that might pose a threat to themselves or someone else, we can actually make that step, prevent them from making that mistake possibly, getting them some help.

"And lives can be saved in the process."
