Maine Gov. Paul LePage — notorious for his rash, shoot-from-the-lip rhetoric — shot down implications that some of his past remarks smacked of racism during a raucous town hall meeting.

"I am not a racist," The Pine Tree State's top Republican insisted at the packed event in Augusta Wednesday night.

LePage was first called out by one man who criticized his past claims that asylum seekers are spreading disease, The Bangor Daily News reports.

Last Febuary, LePage called asylum seekers "the biggest problem in our state," insisting they carried illnesses like hepatitis C, HIV, tuberculosis, and the Zika virus, which he mistakenly said was carried by "the ziki fly" — a declaration the Daily News called "baseless."

At Wednesday's meeting, another man then rose to ask LePage about what he called his "racially charged remarks."

But LePage had had enough.

"Next question," the governor snapped. "I'm not a racist, sir."

LePage, who recently endorsed Donald Trump for president, is well known for his foot-in-mouth rhetoric.

Last month, a Maine high school demanded LePage apologize for allegedly fabricating a story about a drug-addicted student overdosing three times in one week — but the governor insisted the sordid tale was the truth.

LePage also implied Stephen King, who lives in Bangor, spent more time in Florida to avoid paying full property taxes. The bestselling author insisted he paid "every cent" and called on LePage to "man up and apologize." LePage ignored the request.
