Maine Republican Gov. Paul LePage is pulling slightly ahead of two challengers in the state’s tight gubernatorial race, a new survey shows.

The Pan Atlantic SMS Group Omnibus polls has LePage in the lead with 39.3 percent, followed by Democratic challenger Rep. Mike Michaud at 37.6 percent and independent candidate Elio Cuter at 19.5 percent.

The margin of error is plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

LePage was cautious about the results.

"Elections can change on a dime," he remarked of the survey, released Thursday, NBC affiliate WCSH in Portland reports.

"Elections are Nov. 4. I'm working them as hard as I can until November 4. I hope to relax on Nov. 5; either way I'm going to relax."

Pundits were also reflective about the polling, but one noted the survey will like have Democrats "scrambling."

"It’s a close race but also very fluid," Andrew Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, told the Portland Press Herald.

Political analyst Phil Harriman noted "Democrat leaning" pollster "will clearly leave Democrats scrambling as the crucial weeks ahead unfold," WCSH reported.

Still another analyst, Ethan Strimling, told the station "It's always important to not overreact to one poll. … Voters are still making up their minds."

Another poll also released Thursday for CBS and The New York Times had Michaud with a 37 percent to 35 percent lead over LePage, with Cutler trailing at 10 percent, and 13 percent undecided. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
