A leading Maine legislator says he and Gov. Paul LePage want a continuation of a moratorium that has prevented the launch of Maine’s recreational marijuana market —extending it to next January.

House Minority Leader Ken Fredette said he believes a bill now before lawmakers — that would lengthen an existing moratorium due to expire Feb. 1 until April 18 — would be vetoed by LePage because the government needs more time to do things right.

"Everybody knows this passed at referendum and it needs to get done. People should recognize that we are working earnestly, working hard on it. But I don’t like feeling like we are getting pushed in a corner because of a looming deadline." Fredette told the Portland Press Herald.

In November 2016, the Maine Marijuana Legalization Measure was approved by voters allowing residents to grow, own, and use marijuana, but retail sales have been held up as politicians argue how to implement them.
