Republican Senate candidate Connie Mack IV will need a late surge if he is to oust incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson in Florida, NewsmaxZogby Tracking Polls reveals.
In the poll of 842 Florida voters conducted from Tuesday through Thursday, Nelson leads Mack by a margin of 46 percent to 33 percent.
That is up from a 44-to-35-percent margin in a three-day poll completed on Tuesday, and a 43-to-35-percent margin in a second three-day poll completed on Wednesday.
Mack holds a huge lead among Republican voters, 70 percent to 13 percent, but trails among Democrats (81 percent-3 percent) and independents (46 percent-20 percent).
Mack does, however, hold a lead over Nelson in several demographic groups. He is ahead of the two-term incumbent among voters age 50 to 64 (41 percent-35 percent), conservatives (61 percent-19 percent), Asians (61 percent-15 percent), voters earning $35,000 to $50,000 annually (38 percent-35 percent), voters with a union member in the household (46 percent-45 percent), investors (47 percent-39 percent), and voters sympathetic to the tea party (61 percent-26 percent).
The two candidates are tied among white voters, with both getting 40 percent of the vote.
Nelson was elected in 2000, winning the seat vacated by the retirement of Connie Mack IV’s father, Connie Mack, and was re-elected in 2006.
