Mack Blows off GOP Primary Debates

By    |   Tuesday, 19 June 2012 09:09 AM EDT

Florida Senate hopeful Connie Mack is ducking debates with his Republican primary opponents because he has a huge lead and debating them will only help his Democrat opponent, Politico reported.

Mack, the son of a former Florida senator and congressman, said, “We have a 33-point lead,” when asked about skipping three televised GOP primary debates, the site reported.

His primary opponents are former Sen. George LeMieux, former Rep. Dave Weldon and retired Army Col. Mike McCalister. They all trail Mack by at least 32 points. Mack is tied with Sen. Bill Nelson in polls looking at a November contest.

Mack, who is backed by Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, said, “If my opponents want to debate me, that will only help Sen. Nelson” and his aide Jeff Chen has written, “It’s clear the race for the U.S. Senate in Florida is now between Connie Mack, the Republican, and Bill Nelson, the Democrat.”

LeMieux attacked Mack's decision, saying the congressman “wants nothing more than to hide behind his father’s name and allow Republicans to enter the polling booth uninformed.”
