Lugar Won’t Say If He’ll Back Republican Primary Winner

Tuesday, 01 May 2012 11:32 AM EDT

Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar isn't saying whether he will support State Treasurer Richard Mourdock if Lugar loses the May 8 primary.

Mourdock, however, has said he'll throw his backing to the victor, whether it's him or Lugar, against Democratic U.S. Rep. Joe Donnelly, the Evansville Courier & Press reports.

"I've not given it any thought," adding that in Indiana, the loser of a primary is not able to run in the general either as a write-in or under another party.

"After Senator Lugar wins the primary, he will welcome Treasurer Mourdock's support in winning the Indiana Senate seat, gaining Republican control of the U.S. Senate, retaining Republican control of the U.S. House, retaining Republican control of the Indiana state House and governor's mansion, and defeat President Obama in the fall," said Lugar spokesman Andy Fisher.

Mourdock's campaign was more definitive when asked: "Yes. Mourdock will support the winner of the Republican U.S. Senate primary."
