Rep. Loudermilk Reveals He Was Shot At While Driving

By    |   Tuesday, 20 March 2018 11:21 AM EDT

Rep. Barry Loudermilk said he was shot at while driving in a car with his wife Desiree as they were heading toward the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway in September, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Georgia Republican said he and his wife suddenly heard a single "thump" come from the back of the car.

"I'd just passed it off as just something falling down in the trunk or [us] just hearing things or a rock hitting the back of the car," Loudermilk said.

But they later found a bullet lodged above the bumper of the car.

Loudermilk said the FBI is investigating the incident, which had not previously been disclosed publicly, and that "they believe the car was targeted" due to the angle of the shot and the fact that no similar incidents had occurred nearby that day.

It was the second time recently that the representative survived a shooting attack, according to Roll Call.

Last June, he was on the field in Alexandria, Virginia, when a gunman shot at dozens of lawmakers and staffers at a GOP congressional baseball practice.

In addition, the Washington Examiner pointed out that Loudermilk also has gone through some other harrowing experience recently.

In September, he and his wife had a car accident while returning to Washington, D.C., from Georgia when their vehicle flipped several times after being rear-ended on an interstate highway near Knoxville.

And in January, Loudermilk also was on an Amtrak train with other lawmakers traveling to a GOP congressional retreat in West Virginia when it collided with a truck.
