Liberal women’s groups have issued statements slamming Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barret as “ultra conservative” and a “clear and present threat” while six of her former students penned an op-ed calling her someone that teaches “integrity and virtue.”
From the National Organization of Women to Planned Parenthood to other abortion-rights advocates NARAL and Emily’s List, a litany of liberal groups have decried President Donald Trump’s selection to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on Sept. 18.
“Barrett's history of hostility toward reproductive health and rights, expanded health care access, and more demonstrate that she will put Justice Ginsburg's long record of ensuring that everyone receives equal justice under the law at risk," Planned Parenthood President Alexis McGill Johnson said in a statement.
The National Organization for Women, connected to a political action committee (or PAC) that endorsed Democratic nominee Joe Biden for president, claimed that Trump and Republicans are backing Barrett so she “can help repeal Roe (vs. Wade) and shred the Affordable Care Act – but not before she votes with a new, ultra-conservative majority to validate an election he intends to steal."
Other statements have been more vitriolic, prompting the satirical website The Babylon Bee to publish several pieces, including those with headlines such as “Amy Coney Barrett Holds Press Conference In Handmaid's Tale Costume Just To Mess With Liberals” and “CNN Reports Amy Coney Barrett Attended Bizarre Ceremony Where She Ate Flesh, Drank Blood Of Jewish Guy.”
Six of her former students, however, dismissed the criticism and hailed her in a USA Today opinion piece on Sunday.
“Perhaps most importantly, Barrett has taught us how to become women of integrity and virtue,” they wrote. “She treats every person with whom she interacts with the utmost respect, kindness, and warmth — an example we saw played out in the classroom, in office hours when we came to her for counsel, and in her family home as we shared a meal.”
