Liberal groups, looking to block the confirmation of President Donald Trump's pick of Betsy DeVos as education secretary, are trying to flood the phone lines of Washington lawmakers.
CREDO Action's Vice President Murshed Zaheed said his group made 18,000 calls to members of the Senate, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions about DeVos, The Hill reports.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, who sits on the committee and reportedly has been targeted by the group, confirmed on Twitter she has been overwhelmed with calls.
Her office confirmed she has been receiving a "higher than normal amount of calls" but maintained they could be attributed to "a number of things."
Meanwhile, Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., has reportedly received more than 50,000 emails and letters opposing DeVos. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., is said to have received more than 25,000 emails and letters about DeVos with the majority opposing her confirmation.
Other congressional leaders say they have received a high number of calls regarding all Trump's Cabinet picks. During the Women's March on Washington, people were encouraged to chant out the number for the congressional switchboard, according to the Hill.
But Politico reported some Democratic offices are reporting opposition to DeVos is stronger than for any other Cabinet member.
