Declare war on ISIS, limit your war powers — that's the message 13 mostly partisan lawmakers sent to President Donald Trump, Politico reports.
Just one Republican signed the letter sent to Trump urging him to finally amend the 2001 Authorized Use for Military Force (AUMF), passed after 9/11, that gives the president broad powers to go after terrorists without an OK from Congress, Politico reported.
"For too many years, Congress has ignored these ongoing wars," the lawmakers wrote. "Our brave service members face countless dangers for our nation and we owe it to them to act on an AUMF without delay."
The letter was led by Barbara Lee, D-Calif., and Walter Jones of North Carolina was the lone Republican to put his name to the letter.
The "bipartisan letter shows that members of Congress agree that blank checks for endless war are unacceptable and dangerous," Lee said in a statement obtained by Politico.
The AUMF has no end date and has been invoked by the previous two administrations to approved military excursions the world over to fight terrorism, Politico reported.
Al-Qaida was the primary target when the AUMF was passed 16 years ago and ISIS did not exist.
