Abortion-Rights Group Endorses Sinema Challenger

By    |   Wednesday, 04 October 2023 02:05 PM EDT

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., has lost the support of a prominent abortion-rights group that recently endorsed her Democrat challenger, Rep. Ruben Gallego, despite supporting her in her last election, NBC News reports.

The group, Reproductive Freedom for All, previously known as NARAL Pro-Choice America, endorsed Sinema in her last election but chose to side with Gallego, whom the organization has endorsed in three previous elections, in his bid to unseat her.

"Electing him [Gallego] to the U.S. Senate could mean the difference between passing critical abortion and voting rights legislation or seeing it again blocked by extremist Republicans," Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

"The stakes in Arizona have never been higher, and electing a reproductive freedom champion into this seat is essential for protecting and advancing our constitutional rights, not only for Arizonans but for all Americans," Timmaraju added. "This is why we are thrilled to make this endorsement our first as Reproductive Freedom for All."

Sinema first came under fire from abortion-rights groups after she voted in 2021 with Republicans and moderate Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia against a rule change that would have weakened the filibuster.

"We have not endorsed or contributed to Sen. Sinema since her election in 2018," EMILY's List said in a statement at the time. "Right now, Sen. Sinema's decision to reject the voices of allies, partners and constituents who believe the importance of voting rights outweighs that of an arcane process means she will find herself standing alone in the next election."
