Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Wednesday that President Donald Trump's proposed border wall will be more than a simple physical barrier.
"The wall system is not just the infrastructure, but it's the technology and personnel we need to make that aspect of border security functions effectively," Nielsen said on Fox News, adding that the current proposal calls for 700 miles of wall which would be built over the next decade. Trump hopes to reach a deal with legislators in Congress on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in exchange for funding for the wall.
"He wants to find a permanent fix, but he's also very clear that the way to do that is we must increase border security, and close loopholes so that we won't end up here again in two, three years with another population that we're concerned about," she said.
Nielsen also said that she's confident, following Trump's Tuesday meeting with congressional leaders, that a deal is possible.
