Another Kennedy in the House, to Replace Barney Frank?

By    |   Wednesday, 30 November 2011 04:54 PM EST

A new generation of Kennedys could be headed for Washington as Joseph Kennedy III, one of Robert Kennedy’s grandsons, acknowledges that he is eyeing retiring Democratic Rep. Barney Frank’s Massachusetts seat.

Kennedy, 31, told the Boston Herald that he is considering running for the seat, which Frank has held for more than three decades.

If he won, he would be the first Kennedy to hold elected office since Rhode Island Rep. Patrick Kennedy — his first cousin once removed — decided against running for a ninth House term last year.

When a Herald reporter asked whether he would run, Kennedy replied, “I just haven’t had the time to give it any thought, the type of careful consideration that it requires.

“I’ve always thought politics is an honorable profession. It demands that you give it careful thought before you jump into it. When I get the time to do that, I’ll think about it, but we’re not there yet.”

The Herald pointed out that that position is far different from last year, when Kennedy was considered for another vacant Bay State seat, previously held by Democratic Rep. William Delahunt. He quelled speculation about running for that seat as soon as his name was mentioned.

If Kennedy did get the Democratic nomination for the 6th District, he would be a clear favorite to win, even though redistricting has made the seat more competitive, one of the reasons Frank gave for deciding to quit.
