Ken Starr: Bolton, Hunter Biden Likely Trial Witnesses

If witnesses are called to testify before the Senate during President Donald Trump's impeachment trial, former National Security Adviser John Bolton and Hunter Biden, the son of presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden, likely will top the list, Ken Starr said Wednesday.

"I think the top one is John Bolton for the Democrats and the Republicans really do want Hunter Biden," Starr, the independent counsel in ex-President Bill Clinton's impeachment investigation, commented on Fox News' "America's Newsroom," pointing out that will only take a simple majority to call for witnesses.

The Senate is expected to hear testimony from the White House counsel and the House impeachment managers, named Wednesday by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., before voting to call in witnesses, and if "the impeachment managers don't do a fantastic job," the outcome of the case could be over, Starr said.

He said he does, however, think Pelosi chose the managers "well and wisely," except he does have some reservations about Rep. Jerry Nadler and his "approach to things" as he tends to be "just over the top," including during Pelosi's announcement.

Still, there will be a great deal of pressure on the managers to perform well, but if they "overplayed their hand the way Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., just did" there could be issues, said Starr, noting the New York Democrat had declared "we've already proven the case."

"If you've proven the case, you don't need to retry the case," Starr said. "[We have] 100 senators saying we don't need it, we don't want it. These are Republicans and Democrats completely agreeing. That will be a real key. Can you prove this is very serious? But we really need these witnesses even though Jerry Nadler says we proved [the case] beyond a reasonable doubt."
