White House counselor Kellyanne Conway on Friday defended the Trump administration's proposal to cut off federal funding from clinics that perform and/or refer women for abortions.
A guest on Fox News' "America's Newsroom," Conway rebuffed the premise that the move is about cutting off federal funds from Planned Parenthood.
"What this is, is taking money that is Title 10 family planning money and recognizing that abortion is not family planning. This is family planning money," Conway told Fox News.
"Planned Parenthood is the nation's largest abortion provider. It spends tens of millions of dollars on political activity," Conway said. "And there are about 20 qualified women's health centers in this country for every one Planned Parenthood facility."
Conway noted that the qualified women's health centers provide all of the healthcare services for women, save for providing abortions.
"You can still get an abortion in this country, you can get it in many different places, we just don't think taxpayers should have to pay for that," Conway said.
"Let's get out of the business of taxpayer funding of abortions. People still have a right to them but taxpayers shouldn’t be funding them," Conway said.
