White House counselor Kellyanne Conway Monday rejected Sen. Tammy Duckworth's call for President Donald Trump to push for a gun control bill in the GOP-led Senate as a way to stem the violence in the nation's cities, saying that her plea is part of her audition to become Joe Biden's running mate.

"Her evidence of the gun show loopholes having created this wave of violence in these Democrat-controlled cities is what?" Conway said on Fox News' "Outnumbered Overtime" about the Illinois Democrat. "She's got stiff competition, so she's going to say things to mollify the hard left."

Duckworth and several of her colleagues earlier this summer presented a bill that would close a loophole that allows gun sales that allow purchases to proceed if background checks have not been completed within 72 hours after purchase.

But Conway said that guns aren't the problems in a place like Portland, because protesters are "pointing lasers at cops' eyes, in some cases temporarily or permanently damaging their eyesight, throwing rocks and bricks and worse."

Further, some of the cities were the most violence is occurring have the "strictest gun control laws in the country," said Conway.

And in places like New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio pushed to defund the police after years of having a "very complicated and very specific history with the police department that does not reflect well on him."

Meanwhile, Trump is weighing unilateral action on coronavirus legislation, while both parties are at an impasse on the matter, as he "never hesitates" to take action when Congress "fails to do its job."

"Last week the Republicans put on the table that the white house is willing to go for an additional $600 benefit for one week, because that was expiring July 31st. Lo and behold, the Democrats said no . . .their eyes are on November 3rd and the election. They want this to be a cudgel."
