Kellyanne Conway: I Discussed Hatch Act Decision With Trump

(Fox News)

By    |   Thursday, 08 March 2018 03:44 PM EST

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway would only say Thursday that she discussed with President Donald Trump a watchdog's report that she twice violated federal laws during the Alabama Senate race last year.

"The president and I have spoken about this," Conway told Bill Hemmer on Fox News. "I've not made a comment about this at all — and I won't today."

Conway also declined to say whether President Trump had taken any action on the matter.

"I won't reveal anything about my private conversations with the president about anything except that which he would like for me to speak about publicly.

"The White House has spoken," she added. "The White House counsel has spoken — and the White House spoke yesterday."

Conway was referring to press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders' retort Wednesday to the report by the Office of Special Counsel (OSC) Tuesday that she had violated the Hatch Act in expressing Trump's preference for Republican candidate Roy Moore over Democrat Doug Jones.

"She didn't advocate for or against the election of any candidate," Sanders told reporters. "She simply expressed the president's obvious position . . . that he should have people in the Senate who would support his agenda."

The OSC is a federal watchdog agency not affiliated with Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

The Hatch Act, passed in 1939, bars federal government officials from using their positions to influence political campaigns.

Special Counsel Henry Kerner's report cited the interviews Conway gave on Nov. 20 to "Fox and Friends" on Fox News and on Dec. 6 to CNN's "New Day."

Kerner said he was sending his report to President Trump "for appropriate disciplinary action."

Jones won the Dec. 12 special election to fill the seat vacated by five-term Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions, who had been named attorney general.
