Kellen Curry to Newsmax: 100 Percent Agree With Santos Expulsion

By    |   Monday, 04 December 2023 12:03 PM EST

Embattled Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., last week was expelled from Congress in a bipartisan vote following a damning House Ethics Committee report and a 23-count criminal indictment on fraud charges. On Monday, Kellen Curry joined Newsmax to talk about both the expulsion and running for Santos' seat in Long Island as a Republican candidate.

"I agree 100% with the expulsion," Curry said on Newsmax's "National Report." "I think in this case, the evidence was overwhelming. A lot of the things Santos, himself, even confessed to and talked about, and so it was the right time to do this. The country needs to remove him from the House, and the residents of New York's 3rd District deserve to have the best leadership that we can provide."

Prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York say Santos falsified campaign filings, artificially bolstering his campaign’s financial standing with fake donations from relatives and fictional loans, The New York Times reported.

"They have also charged him with stealing from donors by repeatedly charging their credit cards without authorization, and dispersing the funds to his and others’ campaigns, as well as his own bank account," the Times added.

A special election to succeed Santos, expected in February, will kick off the critical 2024 contests for control of the House and will be the first Republican-Democrat matchup in a New York battleground, Politico noted.

Curry, a decorated Afghanistan war veteran, is presenting himself as someone who can be trusted to fill the designer shoes left by Santos.

"The residents of New York's 3rd Congressional District will get a chance to go back to the polls and to pick a new member of Congress. I'm confident that that's going to be me here in a few months," Curry said.

"We've raised nearly half a million dollars. We've got an endorsement from sitting members of Congress, and so we're fired up and ready to go," Curry told Newsmax. "I'm in this race because this country desperately needs the best leadership that we can provide. We have not been getting that for the past several months from Mr. Santos."

"Nothing was getting done, from constituency service to the issues that we care about, like expanding coverage for the 911 Victims fund, repealing the cap on state and local tax deduction. None of that stuff was getting talked about with Santos in office. Unfortunately, this is what it had to come to, and I'm glad that we're here."

Curry said immigration and inflation are of primary concern to New York residents. "Immigration is a national security issue under this administration's disastrous policies. Our families here are impacted by the issue of inflation, and so they want somebody that has first-hand experience working in our nation's economy, which I have.

"I consider myself a next-generation leader. It's why we talk about issues like youth wellness in our public schools, which is a huge issue on Long Island and around the country. It's why we talk about military recruitment challenges right now that we're having. We have to do a better job of engaging the next generation, of positively getting them to think about serving the country again and really quickly."

The Democrats’ pick for the special election is expected to be Tom Suozzi, who formerly represented the 3rd Congressional District in Congress, Politico reported.

The GOP is confident about its chances on Long Island, Politico observed. "Republicans hold every other House seat in suburbs east of New York City; majorities in the Nassau and Suffolk county legislatures; and come January, both county executive seats."
