Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., said in a new interview he is considering stepping down from his leadership role at the Democratic National Committee as domestic violence allegations cloud his campaign for Minnesota attorney general.
Ellison, the deputy chair of the DNC, told WCCO Radio in Minneapolis that he is innocent of the charges leveled by a former girlfriend and that he's trying to dedicate all of his time to his constituents in Minnesota.
"I have been thinking about that. I've been evaluating that recently so we'll see," Ellison said when asked if he's thinking of resigning from the DNC. "I need to put 100 percent of my time, energy, and resources into the race and into my office, and so that's something I am taking consideration on.
"I'll put it like this though: I will be 110 percent for Minnesota all the time, every time without fail. That is something that we're beginning to evaluate right now."
Ellison added that he has asked the House Ethics Committee to investigate the assault charges in an effort to prove he is innocent.
"I want to be transparent, I want to be cooperative. I didn't do these things that my ex-girlfriend accused me of, so I just want to make sure that we get to the bottom of it, and I hope to clear my name as soon as possible," he said.
Karen Monahan said last month Ellison dragged her off a bed by her feet while screaming obscenities at her. She claimed to have video footage of the 2016 incident but has declined to release it.
Ellison said there's no video of the incident because it never happened.
"It's not possible for it to exist," he told WCCO.
