Reps. Cammack, Steube to Newsmax TV: Impeachment Is a Distraction

Wednesday, 27 January 2021 01:43 PM EST

Two Florida Republican lawmakers on Wednesday condemned the "sham" impeachment of former President Donald Trump, calling it a "dangerous" distraction from Congress' work to provide Americans with economic relief from the COVID-19 pandemic.

In remarks on Newsmax TV's "John Bachman Now," Reps. Kat Cammack and Greg Steube decried a process that will put off more important work.

COVID-19 relief is "what people should be focusing on, not this sham impeachment," Cammack said, calling it "just pure politics."

"This sets a very dangerous precedent," she said, adding that focus should be on "what is affecting our constituents every single day."

Steube noted that the Constitution lays out a process that "once the articles of impeachment [are presented] they have to focus on the impeachment until it is resolved."

"It could be two weeks" before the trial is completed, he warned.

Both lawmakers also brushed aside calls for the resignation of freshman Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., over reports she advocated violence against Democrats before she ran for office — with Cammack calling it a "complete distraction" and Steube saying Greene's fate should be up to voters.

"We can agree anyone calling for violence should be condemned," she said, but added: "We need to move past all this ... [and focus on] the real work that needs to be getting done."

Steube pointed out Greene ultimately will answer to voters, saying "this was something she said before she was elected and she's accountable to her constituents."

Both also blasted any moves by Democrats in Congress to make Washington, D.C., a state, with Cammack calling it "a roadmap for further disaster" and Steube calling it unconstitutional.

"There's no place for Washington to become a state. … It is the seat of our government," Cammack said, lamenting, "I don't understand why we can't focus on what Americans have demanded."

Steube asserted the matter is "clear in the Constitution" and that Democrats for "completely partisan" reasons "just want two more votes."
