A member of Ohio Gov. John Kasich's presidential campaign team in Indiana said Tuesday Donald Trump can't win the race for the White House and Republicans need to keep that in mind when they vote in the state's primary.
Days after Kasich and Cruz
announced a joint effort to stop Trump from becoming president, James Brainard told MSNBC he's not here to tell citizens who to vote for. But when pressed, it seemed clear he is gunning for Cruz in the state's May 3 primary.
"I don't think we should be telling voters how to vote," said Brainard, the co-chair of the Kasich election campaign in Indiana and also the mayor of Carmel, Ind.
"But I would encourage voters that want to see a Republican take office in January 2017 to think very carefully about how that could happen.
"Because all the polling shows that Mr. Trump loses to both Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton by huge margins. He just can't win."
Kasich has effectively stopped campaigning in Indiana to allow Cruz to take on Trump head-to-head. Cruz did the same for Kasich in Oregon and New Mexico.
Trump said Tuesday the Kasich-Cruz pact is making both candidates appear "very weak. It looks like collusion. It proves my words that it's a rigged system. You see it's a rigged system."
There was some confusion on Monday regarding the agreement between the two campaigns, with
Kasich saying during a Philadelphia campaign stop that Indiana voters "ought to vote for me."
Kasich added that he simply agreed to stop spending additional resources in the Hoosier State.
