Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri) lauded California colleague Sen. Kamala Harris as a "leader" in the party's effort to form "an immigration policy that is true to the heritage of this country," the Washington Free Beacon reported.

McCaskill introduced Harris at a National Association for the Avancement of Colored People dinner in St. Louis and discussed immigration policy. McCaskill has said she wants to work with Republicans on immigration bills while stressing the need to "secure the border."

But Harris is one of the most outspoken opponents of proposed Republican immigration legislation. On June 18, she called for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen to resign.

McCaskill on Thursday aligned herself with Harris.

"[Harris] has been a leader in this effort to make sure we have an immigration policy that is true to the heritage of this country, and not to the misguided ideas of this president," McCaskill said.

Harris in March supported Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf's plan to warn residents about impending raids from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Trump described the mayor's decision as a "disgrace."

Republican Josh Hawley's team responded to McCaskill’s appearance with Harris by nicknaming her "California Claire."

"California Claire and Kamala Harris are completely aligned on some of the most left-wing issues in the Senate," Hawley campaign spokesman Kelli Ford said. "They both support sanctuary cities, they both oppose a border wall, they don't want a citizenship question on the Census, and they fully endorse Senator Feinstein's open borders bill. It's pretty clear partisan liberal Claire McCaskill agrees more with California voters than Missouri's."

In a separate report, McCaskill in 2004 criticized an opponent for taking trips on a private plane that taxpayer money funded, but now has stirred controversy for flying on a private plane that she owns, according to the Washington Free Beacon.

In 2004, McCaskill slammed then-Missouri Gov. Bob Holden, noting his "lavish" lifestyle and trips on a private jet.

Reporter Brent Scher reported June 12 in the Free Beacon that GPS tracking information showed her using a private plane during her campaign's RV tour.
