Crossroads Ad Hits Kaine on Defense Cuts

Tuesday, 09 October 2012 07:58 PM EDT

A new ad by Crossroads Policy Strategies hammers Virginia Senate candidate Tim Kaine on looming devastating cuts to the defense budget, the Washington Post reported.

The former governor and chairman of the Democratic National Committee faces former governor and senator George Allen for the Senate seat in Virginia.

The ad focuses on defense cuts that will occur unless Congress and the White House make a deal. Crossroads Grassroots Policy Strategies is a Republican advocacy group co-founded by Karl Rove.

“Tim Kaine supported the Washington budget deal, a deal that could destroy over 500,000 jobs in the defense industry,” the ad’s narrator says, according to the Post. “Tim Kaine didn’t put Virginia first, so, Virginia, don’t put Tim Kaine in the Senate.”

Allen has said defense cuts should be averted and made elsewhere.

The Allen campaign on Tuesday announced two more campaign ads were on the way, one of which accuses Kaine of waging a "war on coal," CBS News reported.

The Kaine campaign released a new ad on Tuesday highlighting his record working with current Virginia Democratic Senator Mark Warner.

The two candidates faced off in a debate Monday night for the first time on national television.

The race has been close but Kaine has made gains, according to CBS News, with some polls showing him taking over the lead.
