President Donald Trump says he is planning another Fourth of July celebration in 2020 following the "tremendous success" of last week's event.

"Based on its tremendous success we're just making the decision — and I think we can say we've made the decision — to do it again next year, and maybe we can say for the foreseeable future," Trump said during an appearance at an environmental policy event.

Trump's "Salute to America" event, which took place on the National Mall, featured Army tanks, fireworks, a military flyover, and musical performances. The president also spoke for 45 minutes from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial amid heavy rain.

"Standing on the steps of the great Lincoln Memorial and looking out on the crowds, these incredible, big, beautiful crowds braving the weather all the way, back to the Washington Monument," he said. "We celebrated freedom and all its magnificence while saluting our great military. It was something really special."

His declaration is likely to cause a stir, as Senate Democrats earlier in the day requested the Government Accountability Office open an investigation into the cost of the celebration, including whether it complied with legal restrictions on political activity.
