President Barack Obama has decided not to renominate a controversial Georgia judge in 2015 after months of opposition from members of his own party, according to
Politico.
According to Politico, the president has withdrawn his support for Judge Michael Boggs amid concerns about his record on abortion, same-sex marriage, and the Confederate flag.
Georgia's two Republican senators said they continued to support the judge who was nominated to serve on the federal court in the Northern District of Georgia.
"We regret the President's decision, as we have supported Judge Boggs throughout this process and remain steadfast in our support. Judge Boggs has served the state with honor and integrity as an appellate and trial judge," said retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss and Sen. Johnny Isakson, according to Politico.
"Throughout the process, Judge Boggs has exhibited enormous restraint and the temperament expected of a jurist."
Boggs was originally nominated in December 2013 but his confirmation never went up for a vote.
Democrats had changed the filibuster rules last year to push through presidential nominations to the benefit of dozens of judicial appointees but Boggs was not among them.
"He's a person who's not — in my opinion — in the mainstream, and I don't think he deserves to be a federal judge," Reid said in May, according to Politico.
