Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., on Sunday blamed Democratic Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers’ refusal to accept federal help to quell riots for the death of two demonstrators at the hands of a teenage vigilante.
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Johnson decried the “siege on our cities” and said the way to stop the violence is “you surge manpower and resources.”
“The governor did not accept that, that day, that night, tragically, two people lost their lives because citizens took matters into their own hands,” he said of deadly confrontation between an armed teenager and demonstrators.
“I'm not for vigilantism. I'm not sure that's what was happening,” he said.
“People felt because the governor and local officials were looking for help. The governor did not accept the help. And so there was not the resolve to end the rioting and so people took matters into their own hands and that's what ended up happening. People die.”
Johnson said it was when “local officials said, ‘please, we want help, we want manpower’ …the governor accepted [federal help] and now the streets are not violent.”
