The United States is the “world’s piggy bank,” but President Donald Trump’s tariffs crackdown is changing that, Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said Sunday.
In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Johnson praised Trump for “brilliantly” using a tariff threat against Mexico.
“We’re the piggy bank,” Johnson said. “The United States is the piggy bank, it has all the money that others want to take from us, but they are not taking it so easy anymore, it's a lot different.”
According to Johnson, “a lot of people, Senators included, they have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to tariffs.”
“They have absolutely no idea,” he said. “When you have the money, when you have the product, you have the thing that everybody wants, you're in a position to do very well with tariffs and that's where we are.”
“I think just in general Republicans understand that tariffs are attacks on American consumers and we don't want to see them in place long-term, nor do I believe President Trump does either.,” he added.
“He's using tariffs as leverage in trade negotiations and I think he used them as leverage in the situation brilliantly, quite honestly.”
Johnson also said the GOP caucus remains solidly behind Trump.
“I think the caucus definitely supports the president and his use of tariffs as leverage to get our trading partners to treat us fairly with reciprocal treatment, and I think he’s also supported in this case,” he said.
