One of the original eight to call for Speaker Kevin McCarthy's ouster, Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., told Newsmax on Wednesday that while it's a great win to usher in newly elected Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., the populous faction of Republicans should remain ever vigilant about the "swamp's" efforts to pressure him.
Good told "Rob Schmitt Tonight," "We will have to hold him accountable. Also, the swamp is not going to give up."
The congressman from Virginia went on to outline that whom Johnson decides to hire is "critically important" because a number of staffers vying for slots will have come from McCarthy's office.
"Who he hires in his staff is critically important. I hope he will remove all the McCarthy staff and start fresh," Good said.
"I hope that he won't go to the ... rotten apples on the ground, that he'll go to the tree and get fresh, new staff.
"And we will have to lean into him and help influence him to do the right thing, because he's going to have all kinds of pressures upon him from the wrong people. So the battle is just beginning. This was an important victory. But the fight goes on for the country," Good added.
