White House chief of staff John Kelly was so furious after President Donald Trump’s news conference with Russia’s Vladimir Putin that he gave Capitol Hill Republicans the go-ahead to speak out against Trump, Vanity Fair reported Tuesday night.
VF’s Gabriel Sherman, citing unnamed sources, reported that Kelly had told Trump his remarks would worsen his situation with special counsel Robert Mueller — and “exerted pressure to try to get the president to walk back his remarks.”
In addition, Sherman wrote, “Kelly called around to Republicans on Capitol Hill and gave them the go-ahead to speak out against Trump.”
Both Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan held news conferences to assert that Russia meddled in the 2016 election. Sherman reported that Trump himself initially reacted with surprise at the outrage over the news conference.
“He was enraged there was a lack of people out there defending him,” one unnamed source told Sherman.
On Tuesday afternoon, Trump declared that he accepts that there was Russian meddling in the 2016 election, and said he misspoke in his comments.
