Ohio Gov. John Kasich is dismissing calls to drop out of the Republican presidential race, saying he is just now getting noticed.
"First of all, I'm starting to get known in this country for the first time, and the message is being heard," Kasich said Sunday on
"Face the Nation." "As I heard Bernie Sanders saying, it's proportional. I don't have to win these places; I just have to hang it there and continue to gain momentum."
Kasich said he never expected to win in South Carolina, but pointed to his second-place win in New Hampshire. He believes his appeal lies in states such as Massachusetts, Vermont, Michigan and Virginia.
He also said he expects to "outperform" in Mississippi, and noted that he has exceeded expectations throughtout the campaign.
"We feel good about where we are," Kasich said. "Everybody, just hang on. Things are going to settle down."
As for those who think he should drop out so the establishment vote can gather behind Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Kasich had some advice: "If people want to consolidate, they ought to consolidate my way."
