The Trump White House is likely to be having a much harder time dealing with the announcement of a special counsel than did the Nixon administration, said former Nixon official John Dean.
The Nixon White House was more established and compartmentalized during the Watergate investigation, so while some parts of the administration were dealing with Watergate, other parts were still able to carry on normal business, Dean said Wednesday on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360."
The Trump administration, on the other hand, is still finding its footing and hasn't filled all its staffing positions.
"I'm sure it's a real ripple going through the operation," he said.
Though Dean was called by the FBI the "master manipulator" of the Watergate scandal, he told Cooper he didn't see the special prosecutors as enemies, though others in the administration probably did. Dean cooperated with the investigation and received a lighter sentence.
Asked whether Nixon would have had more troubles had Twitter existed at the time, Dean said his old boss, unlike Trump, likely would have had trouble operating the social media platform.
Nixon "had trouble with his desk drawer," Dean said. "And those bottles that you had to push down to turn medicine bottles, he would fight those, so I'm not sure he would be skilled at Twitter."
