Republicans are miffed at the chief of staff of Vice President Mike Pence who earlier this week said the GOP should "purge" lawmakers who don't fall in behind President Donald Trump's agenda, the Washington Examiner reported.
Nick Ayers' comments to GOP donors got the attention of Sen. John Cornyn, the No. 2 ranking Republican.
"I enjoy it when Republicans fight against Democrats more than when Republicans fight against other Republicans," the majority whip said, the Examiner reported.
"Just imagine the possibilities of what can happen if our entire party unifies behind him, if — and this sounds crass — we can purge the handful of people who continue to work to defeat him," Ayers told GOP donors Tuesday.
Lawmakers think they're being cast as scapegoats for failing to pass healthcare legislation, the Examiner reported.
"The chief of staff to the vice president of the United States of America seemed almost more giddy at our failures than our successes," a GOP Senate aide told the Examiner. "For anyone who cares about tax reform done, that should worry them."
Ayers has long held the reputation as the most hated political operative in America.
