Republican John Cornyn on Wednesday said the Senate was forced into at least two more stopgap funding bills, thanks to Democrats who shut down government and are now holding appropriations "hostage" over immigration, The Hill reports.
"So as a result of the shutdown, the Democratic leader, who said he voted against the four-week continuing resolution because he didn't like continuing resolutions, he's guaranteed us at least two more continuing resolutions," Cornyn said, referring to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
"Even if the spending caps were agreed to today, it would take the appropriations committee a matter of additional weeks to come up with a bill we could vote on," The Hill quoted Cornyn.
The latest continuing resolution passed Monday funds the government through Feb. 8, setting up another deadline.
Democrats forced a weekend shutdown over protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, a non-budget issue that continues to gnaw at Republicans.
"The other issue we've got to address . . . is budget caps. That's another issue that's been held hostage by this unrelated immigration issue known as DACA, which everybody has heard so much about," The Hill quoted Cornyn.
