House Speaker John Boehner said Thursday that the White House has done nothing to aid congressional investigators during their probe of IRS impropriety.
“This is outrageous, and the White House has not lifted a finger to help us get to the bottom of this,” Boehner said,
The Hill reports.
Former IRS official Lois Lerner prompted the investigation when she admitted the agency had gone after Tea Party groups seeking tax-exempt status.
Now The Hill reports that Republican Boehner is steaming mad that inquiries into who knew what and when have been stalled.
"Listen, I asked this a long time ago. I didn’t want to know who was going to be investigated. I wanted to know who was going to jail," The Hill reports Boehner saying to reporters, adding that President Obama, "owes the American people the truth about what happened at the IRS."
The agency told investigators that many of Lerner's emails were destroyed or missing in action because Lerner's computer crashed in mid-2011 and the hard drive has been destroyed, the Hill reports.
But Republicans want proof of that claim and are seeking maintenance logs from the IRS according to The Hill.
The White House said Wednesday that there were no direct emails between Lerner and White House officials between 2009 and mid-2011, according to the report.
Obama has also said there isn't “a smidgen” of wrong doing in the IRS case.
But Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., and House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., have said that the said the Obama administration has impeded their investigation.
Meanwhile House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.,
blamed former president George W. Bush for the scandal.
The Huffington Post reports that Pelosi said Bush appointed former IRS Commissioner Douglas Schulman, who said he doesn't know why the agency targeted conservative groups.
Pelosi says blaming Obama for the problem is "outrageous."
"The President doesn’t know about everything that is going on in every agency of government," Pelosi said according to Huffington Post. "Should Mr. Boehner have known that this is his neighboring district and in Cincinnati where the IRS office is?"
