Lawmakers from both major political parties are worried about the alleged relationship between President Donald Trump's White House and Russia, Sen. Joe Manchin said Friday.
During an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Manchin addressed former FBI Director James Comey's Thursday testimony in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee — of which Manchin, D-W.V., is a member.
"There's an awful lot of us on both sides of the aisle that are very uncomfortable with this relationship that [the Russians] seem to have with the White House," Manchin said. "It goes all the way to the day Comey was fired to the day after [when] the Russians were there [in the Oval Office], not allowing the United States of America's press in, the free press of America, but letting the controlled press of Russia in.
"Those are a lot of concerning things and people have talked about that."
Comey said during his testimony there is no doubt Russia tried to influence the U.S. presidential election last year. He also spoke about Trump's loyalty request and the multiple times Trump seemed to hint at wanting Comey's FBI to drop its investigation into Russia and former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
The White House disputes some of what Comey said. Manchin said he wants someone from the White House to answer questions from the committee under oath.
"We were in an open meeting. He was sworn in under oath. He is a professional law enforcement officer of the highest degree, knowing the consequences if you lie under oath to a Senate committee," Manchin said of Comey. "So, I would think that Mr. Comey is basically explaining to us and giving us his reminiscing of the events that happened in a most accurate way.
"Everybody seems to have different opinions of this. We don't have the White House counsel under oath. They weren't there. If they want to make that statement in front of us and come under oath and give us the same recollection of what they have, that would be the way that you could find out [who is telling the truth]."
