The grandson of former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has a "real possibility" of becoming the Democratic House speaker, an influential Irish publisher says.
Joe Kennedy III "is suddenly in the limelight" following 10-term Rep. Joe Crowley’s shocking defeat in the New York state Democratic primary, Niall O’Dowd writes in a column for IrishCentral.com, the Irish news website he founded.
"He is among the Young Turks mentioned as a successor to Crowley and even as speaker if they choose to replace [Nancy] Pelosi in November and the Dems win back the House.
"If a Pelosi blockade were to come to pass Kennedy would be one of the very few contenders with name recognition and widespread popularity named to replace her … The Crowley loss has utterly changed the dynamic for Democrats in the House and Kennedy is the name on many lips.”
Kennedy, 37, has served Massachusetts's 4th congressional district since 2013. Aside from being RFK’s grandson, he is the grand-nephew of President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Ted Kennedy.
