Biden Denies He Dodged McCarthy Collaboration

By    |   Wednesday, 04 October 2023 08:17 PM EDT

President Joe Biden addressed concerns that he avoided collaboration with former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., during a White House press briefing on Wednesday.

When questioned about his lack of direct communication with McCarthy, Biden responded, "We had two agreements we shook hands on, and I assumed he was working with the Democrats in the House and Senate.

"It wasn't for me to do anything. If he wanted to talk to me, I was available. I'm available to whomever wants to talk to me, but the idea that I was going to somehow convince McCarthy to change his view was not reasonable."

McCarthy, who assumed the role of speaker in January, initiated an impeachment inquiry into Biden last month regarding his son Hunter's business dealings and accused the president of contributing to the budget crisis. Despite the related tensions, McCarthy found himself relying on Democratic support to pass a temporary spending measure signed by Biden, thereby preventing a government shutdown.

Nevertheless, McCarthy criticized the Democrats on CBS's "Face The Nation" on Sunday, alleging that they were obstructing the passage of the spending bill.

It's worth noting that video footage of McCarthy's interview on "Face The Nation" was reportedly shown at a Democratic caucus meeting on Tuesday, according to Mediaite. This development may have influenced Democrat leadership's decision not to oppose Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., in his efforts to remove McCarthy from the position of speaker.
