Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., claimed any changes made to a controversial memo by Rep. Devin Nunes R-Calif., chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, before it was handed over to the White House for a potential release to the public, would be serious.
Himes' comments came after fellow committee member Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., had sent a letter to Nunes saying the changes had not been approved by the whole committee.
"If you read Adam Schiff's letter, and Adam Schiff, whatever you think of him being a Democrat in what has unfortunately become a partisan fight, is an attorney," Himes said Thursday on CNN.
"He's very careful. He's not bombastic. He doesn't bend the truth, and the words he used were that there were material and substantive changes."
"At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter how big the changes were. This is very serious stuff.
"When a committee votes to release an explosive memo that many of us believe is founded on falsehood and designed to tar the FBI, you don't then get to alter the language particular when you now have read a Democratic memo which rebuts the allegation that are in that memorandum."
The committee had voted Monday to release the memo, which accused the Justice Department and FBI of misusing their authority to get a surveillance order a former Trump campaign aide.
Nunes, along with his staff, wrote the memo.
