Mother: Jackson Jr. Has Endured 'Enormous Disappointment'

By    |   Saturday, 14 July 2012 06:11 PM EDT

Ailing congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. has suffered years of "enormous disappointment," his mother revealed at the annual Rainbow/PUSH conference.

"He thought he was going to be a senator. He thought he was going to have a chance to run for mayor. And young people don’t bounce back from disappointment like me and my husband,” Jacqueline Jackson told the women’s luncheon at the conference, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Jackson's doctors revealed this week that he is suffering from a "mood disorder" which has kept him out of Congress for a month. The Sun-Times said he has checked himself into a rehab center "reportedly in Arizona."

Political observers believe that Jackson Jr., 47, will have difficulty rebuilding his once-promising political career which has been shattered by his illness and an ethics investigation.

His mother had not planned to speak to the gathering, but told reporters her daughter urged her to comment on the status of the Illinois congressman.

“My son is unwell, and he needs a moment to heal. And I ask you to pray for me without cease," she said. "Do for me what I’ve done for you. I want you to respect that. Give us a moment. Most of all for him.”
