Gov. Brown to Dems: If Everything Is a Lawsuit We're in Trouble

By    |   Sunday, 26 March 2017 09:21 AM EDT

California, arguably the most liberal state in the union, will not "be running to the courthouse every day" to fight President Donald Trump, Gov. Jerry Brown, D-Calif., tells NBC's "Meet The Press" on Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"We're going to fight very hard, but we're not going to bring stupid lawsuits or be running to the courthouse every day," Brown tells host Chuck Todd, per the Times.

"We're going to be careful. We'll be strategic."

Brown might be one of the Democrats across the aisle President Trump can call upon to work a deal with the left in Congress, which did not cast a single vote for House Speaker Paul Ryan's, R-Wis., American Health Care Act. Resistance to President Trump is winning right now, but there needs to be some middle ground found, says Brown, who remains against Trump's immigration orders in the state of California.

"Well, if everything's a lawsuit, yeah, we're in trouble here," Brown tells Todd, per the Times. "I do curb the exuberance on either side.

"People like to escalate. Republicans do that, and Democrats also do that. So I'm there somewhat as the senior statesman now, and I'm going to keep everything on an even keel."

Not being able to work with Democrats might ultimately be President Trump's undoing, and the government is going to have to pay for programs, despite the House Freedom Caucus' resistance to it in helping avoid a vote on Ryan's AHCA.

"It's going to take some income support from the federal government," Browns tells Todd, per the Times. "It's going to take healthcare.

"It's going to take the kind of programs that the Republican Party traditionally doesn't like. So here's the dilemma: Yes, Obama was not able to help those people in the way they felt they had a right to, but Mr. Trump, now the burden is on you.

"And you better figure it out, or you're not going to be there again."
