Jen Psaki, who served as communications director under former President Barack Obama, said comments by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., about the 2016 presidential election being rigged were because she was running for president in 2020.

"The reality here though is that when you have Sen. Elizabeth Warren go out and say 'this is rigged,' we should all remember she's going to run for president in 2020," Psaki said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

"She wants Bernie Sanders supporters," Psaki added. "There's political motivation there, too."

Warren last week told CNN she believed the 2016 Democratic primary was rigged to favor candidate Hillary Clinton. She made the statement after revelations by former Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile in her soon-to-be-released book where she claimed Clinton controlled the party through a special fundraising arrangement.

"The funding arrangement with HFA and the victory fund agreement was not illegal, but it sure looked unethical," Brazile wrote of the agreement.

"If the fight had been fair, one campaign would not have control of the party before the voters had decided which one they wanted to lead. This was not a criminal act, but as I saw it, it compromised the party's integrity," she added.
