Sen. Jeff Sessions said Thursday night House Speaker Paul Ryan was wrong to hold back his support of Donald Trump for president.
"I think this was a big mistake, I really do," the Alabama Republican said on Fox Business Network's
"Lou Dobbs Tonight."
"I'm surprised, frankly, because he'd indicated that he would support whoever the nominee was."
Sessions said someone in Ryan's position is very influential and needs to set the tone for all Republican lawmakers.
"The Speaker of the House is a big leader and an important figure in the Republican Party," Sessions said. "He calls on House members every day to stand with him in unity. He needs to set a good example for Republicans."
Ryan said Thursday he will not yet back Trump's presidential bid, despite the fact that he is the party's presumptive nominee.
Former Presidents
George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush said this week they'll skip the convention and will not endorse Trump for president. 2012 Republican presidential nominee
Mitt Romney won't attend the convention either.
Sessions has endorsed Trump, but recently said he will not be his
running mate.
