Alabama GOP Sen. Jeff Sessions on Sunday chided House Speaker Paul Ryan for his reluctance to endorse Donald Trump, saying the party doesn't "need to have the speaker hanging out there."

In an interview on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures," the veteran lawmaker was asked if he believes Ryan will fall in line behind the party's presumptive nominee.

"Well, I would hope so and expect to do that," he said. "We don't need to have the speaker hanging out there, in my opinion."

Sessions also suggested Ryan doesn't read free trade agreements, despite being their most powerful advocate in the Republican Party.

"I know the speaker believes in trade agreements, any of them," Sessions said. "I don't think he feels he has to read them, they've just got to be good. But I don't agree with that, and the American people have voted on that — they've spoken. Donald Trump has won and he is crystal clear on this issue: We are not going to have any trade agreements unless it protects the American interest."

He also dismissed the prospect of sharing the ticket with Trump.

"I've got enough to do right now," he said. "Donald Trump is going to pick a great vice president. Somebody that can serve the interest of this can, who can be a good president if called upon, who could be an ally to him personally and philosophically. And there are some good people out there and I'm sure he'll find the right person."
