A frustrated Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake took aim at the party's leadership voting strategy on the Iran nuclear deal, saying it simply "does not make sense."
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell should have taken a deal from Minority Leader Harry Reid to get a final vote on the so-called disapproval resolution with a 60-vote threshold, Flake tells
Politico.
"I don't agree with my leadership on this," Flake tells Politico. "It does not make sense."
And it's a big waste of time, he adds.
"To not have a final vote on this? If our purpose is to put people on the record where they are on this, then you only do that with a final vote, not a cloture vote," Flake tells Politico.
Politico notes after Reid made an offer to hold a final vote at the 60-vote threshold, McConnell tried to get Democrats to vote at a simple majority threshold, which Reid instantly rejected.
The failure then wound up with Democrats
blocking a final vote on the disapproval resolution last Thursday.
Flake tells Politico the Senate now is choosing instead to take procedural votes on amendments requiring Iran to recognize Israel and release Americans held in Iran – measures likely to fail as well.
