An editor at The New York Observer, which is owned by Donald Trump's son-in-law, says a heartfelt column he wrote begging his father not to vote for the presumptive GOP presidential nominee has been rejected for publication.
"Editorial decided it would no longer accept columns of this nature on this topic," Ryan Holiday, who has been at the Observer as an editor-at-large and columnist since January 2014, said of his column. "I have the utmost respect for the leadership at the Observer, but I respectfully disagree with that decision."
The rejection comes nine days after Observer entertainment writer Dana Schwartz wrote a
column slamming publisher Jared Kushner, an Orthodox Jew, for not refuting Trump's "blatant anti-Semitic imagery" in a campaign poster ripping Hillary Clinton.
The poster shows the image of the Star of David, in which the words "Most Corrupt Candidate Ever!" are printed. To the right of the star is Clinton, who is depicted with a piles of one-hundred dollar bills behind her.
Kushner — married to Ivanka Trump and said to be a behind-the-scenes adviser to his father-in-law's presidential campaign — later fired back in his own column denying Trump is anti-Semitic.
In his rejected column,
which is now posted on Medium.com, Holiday writes in part:
"Having been associated with my own fair share of controversial people, I empathize with the position, Jared Kushner, the paper's owner, must be in. I get that elections are complicated. Yet I cannot help but feel that the right choice has become increasingly simple. Not easy, but simple."
The baffling reality is that when it comes to Trump, it's difficult to critique him on much besides his personality and (lack of) character — because that is all there is. "
Dad, please don't vote for Donald Trump. Everything you've taught me about what is wrong in the world is everything that man represents. And if you won't do it for me, do it for your grandchild. Give him something to be proud of — and thankful for. Your Loving Son, Ryan."
Observer editor-in-chief Ken Kurson could not immediately be reached for contact by Newsmax.
But Politico reports Observer senior politics editor Jillian Jorgensen tweeted that open letters about Trump are not banned, but rather "open letter type stuff that is about the Observer. So, less navel-gazing."
The Observer has been mired in controversy because of its publisher's ties with Trump. In April, its political reporter Ross Barkan and restaurant critic Joshua David Stein resigned after the newspaper endorsed Trump.
